AboutThe Old Portlians Cycling Club has been active in all branches of cycling sport and leisure for over 85 years. Founded in 1921 as an athletic club for the Old Boys of Portland Road School South Norwood in Croydon, we offered cricket, athletics and football as well as cycling. In the years before the Second World War the non-cycling activities dwindled and by 1940 the club became purely devoted to cycling. The Old Ports have, over the years, become well-respected and can boast of many champions and record holders both at National and at Regional level. Currently two of our members are undergoing training as British Cycling qualified coaches. This will enable us to offer much improved support to our members particularly to our young members. We currently have many active racing members who train hard throughout the seasons and actively race during the season.
2003 saw the club reap well deserved rewards for their efforts, with a
double win at the 2-day Isle of Wight road race - in the mens and
womens categories, we had two riders finish respectably in the Surrey
League Elite 5 Day Stage Race and one of our women was selected to ride
for her national team(Ireland) at the World Championships in 2004.
The club is also very active in time trialling, with many members
racing every weekend. A few of our riders have managed to break the
hour for 25 miles, two hours for 50 and close to the magic four hours
for the hundred miles.
We are currently
compiling a detailed history of our club and one of the documents we
shall use is that written by the late but much loved Eddie Cook a past
Club Secretary in the 1970/80s. You can read it hereStand by for future historical information. |
