Club 25 Mile time trial Championship: Sunday 5 September
(
Held in the SCCU Open 25 on G25/53)

Simon Steel's it!!

Today was the clubs 25 mile championship, with silverware on offer.

It was a glorious morning early mist cleared leaving an almost perfect float day, with a slight breeze which effected you on the northbound sections.

The results:

Simon Steel 57mins 35secs, for 11th place, an all time PB for 25miles by 47secs!!!!
Ian Bashford 57min 59secs   a course PB for 12th place
David Hickman 1hr 5mins 43secs

Dave was still coughing up nasty stuff , so hadnt got over his recent infection!!

It is only the second time under the hour, for Simon, the other being on the E2/25 in June.
Simon has to be congratulated on a fantastic weekend, not only has he had two PBs in one weekend, he has also won the Club 25mile Rose Bowl in a time that hasnt been beaten since 1996 [Colin Smith 55.33 ]

34 Nomads CC Open 10 on Q10/19: 4 September

Simon at speed?  or on it !?

The morning was quite crisp to say the least, and very foggy for the early starters on the outward leg, the fog cleared for a glorious morning

The results as follows:

Simon Steel   22mins 11secs avg 27.05mph = 23rd place
Ian Bashford   22mins 44secs avg 26.39mph 29th place
Steve Lennell  26mins 2secs avg 23.05mph 55th place

A blinding result both from Simon as it was a PB of over a minute and Steve who managed a PB of 17secs for a ten and it was a course PB by 1min 6secs.

Finsbury Park C.C. F1B/25,  22 August

Starting at Tempsford on the A1, south for 12.5 miles then north for the same amount. An undulating course which is much quicker on the way back, due to the prevailing wind.Three roundabouts to negotiate but not a problem.

Two Old Ports entered, Simon Steel and Ian Bashford.

The day was dry a little overcast to start with and bloody cold, according to Simon, with sunny bits with an increasing wind from the south.

Outward leg was pretty hard, its lumpy out and with the wind, however the return, very fast.

Sadly Simon had rear tyre problems and couldnt pump his  tyre up. A disc wheel versus track pump senario, with track pump winning . Simon lost the will to live and went home.

Ian Bashford however started and battled against all the odds in a top quality field of 120 riders

Bashers: 56mins 58secs ;avsp 26.33mph 35th

Winner Tony Gibb Plowman Craven & Associates RT in 49mins 40secs avsp 30.20mph. This man had no previous 25mile time!!!

Gravesend C.C. on the Q25/22. 15 August

Allhallows to Grain , twice.

A lovely day, if you like the coast, the wind , well last year it was coming off the coast, this year just to make it different, it was from the opposite direction.
Anyway one Old Port entered Ian Bashford, ending up with a very mediocre, 1hr 0mins 19secs for 8th place avg 24.87mph.
The winner Glenn Taylor  API Resprays in 56mins 25secs avg 26.59mph
It is strange how short our memory is, as last year I swore not to do this course again! However I did beat last years time by 25secs.

San Fairy Ann C.C. 10mile TT on Q 10/30    7th August 2004

This course is an out and back starting at Herne Bay, five and a half miles east on the A299 then four and a half miles back. A quick course I have been told, if there isnt a wind coming in from the sea.

Saturday was of course red hot and there was a stiff breeze from the east which made the outward leg difficult, however the return was ballistic.
Result
Ian Bashford: 22mins 35secs avg 26.6mph 18th place
Event Winner
Stephen Castle GS Invicta 20mins 53secs avg 28.73mph

Shaftesbury CC 50 1st August  for Simon

This is an out & back DC course. It starts near junction 9 of the M11, runs north east for 23.9 miles along the A14 & A11, turns & comes back. Previous visits have seen a headwind on the way back, which is also the harder leg (more uphill). If you don't make the turn in around 55m then there’s usually no chance of trying for sub 2 hrs for us mortals. Anyway, had an early start at 5.52am, so slept in the camper in the HQ car park - I'm just a beginner Dave, one day I'll have a caravan! Warm & a slight breeze at the off, picking up up to a stiff breeze in your face on the way out. Turned in 1.04.10 Return leg with a chuff wind was far more pleasant, 1.01.47

Simon Steele : 2.05.57 & 47th from a field of 108.

Winner was Ian Cammish, 54.56 & 53.26 for an overall 1.48.22

Bashers prevails in the Club 100 Championships at The Southern Counties 100 held on the G100/59.  July 25th 2004

To explain this course would take a lifetime, however a quick explanation is, Starts at West Grinstead it heads off towards Broadbridge Heath and Crawley where it does two 30 mile laps, you then turn off to the nasty bits of, Cowfold Bolney, Henfield, back to West Grinstead then south on the A24 to Ashington, where you turn then retrace the A24 to Dial Post { the finish and HQ you pass!!! } another 10 mile lap taking you to Coolham then Danhill before you get back onto the A24 to finally finish at Dial Post.

The day started off a bit overcast with a little bit of wind, but as tha day went on the wind picked up making all the southward bits hard.

Our results

Ian Bashford: 4hr 29min 37sec 14th place avsp 22.25mph

Simon Steel: 4hr 35min 32sec 18th place avsp 21.78mph

The event winner was Keith Coffey in 3hr 55min 20sec avsp 25.5mph!!!!

There you have it the hundred cup has been decided, at the moment the senior BAR stands at Simon 23.967mph and Bashers at 24.7mph

Saturday 17th July. SERC 10mile TT on G10/57 Horsham course

This course starts at the Rusper Road roundabout on the A264 at Horsham it basically goes 5 miles out to Crawley then back.

It was a dull sort of day with some wind, but you didn’t really know which way it was coming from. At the start you would have thought it would be wind assisted going out, that wasn’t the case!

However four OPs entered, Ian Bashford, Nic Hooper, Barry Meens and Simon Steel.

Results as follows:

Ian Bashford: 22mins 52 secs 14th place avg 26.24mph

Barry Meens: 24mins 13 secs 26th place avg 24.77mph

Nic Hooper:   26mins 58 secs 46th place avg 22.25mph

Simon Steel:  23mins 00secs  15th place  avg 26.09mph. A personnel best for Simon, he was gutted that the time keepers gave him that time, as he had recorded his time some two seconds quicker, he really wanted a sub 22minute ride.

The winner was Sean Yates in 19 mins 42 secs avg 30.46mph

Sunday 18 July 04 Southend Wheelers 50 mile TT on E21/50, SPOCO counting event.

This course is one really to be avoided, very lumpy, it not very pleasant at all. Its basically a two and tree quarters   laps of a course starting just west of Latchingdon in Essex, going through Althorne, Asheldham, Tillingham,Bradwell,Steeple back to Latchingham. The finish is two or three miles after Steeple on the third lap. You go past the HQ three times very unkind!! The weather, well it was windy, these peninsula courses tend to be like that, but when it started to rain as well, NOT NICE. Especially as the back end of the course uses a country lane with lots of 90 degree turns in it, very slippery.

Ian Bashford: 2hrs 8mins 40secs avg. 23.32mph  6th place!!!!

The winner Glen Taylor APi Reprays 1hr 56mins 36secs avg 25.73mph

Surrey Road C.C. G25/45 - 11/7/04

Bashers reports:

A 25 mile T.T. starting at Kingsfold, half lanes and half dual carriageway, looping around to Ockley via Beare Green roundabout then onto Broadbridge Heath and the dual carriageway section to Southwater and back to the finish at Broadbridge Heath. It is an undulating first 13miles but quite quick.

The morning started very wet with a bit of a breeze. The early starters got wet and stayed wet, I just got wet going to the start. Four OPs were entered in a field of 60

The results:-

  • Ian Bashford 58mins 51secs avg 25.49mph 9th place
  • Nic Hooper 1hr 12mins 26secs avg 20.71mph 39th place
  • Dave Hickman DNS(backache)
  • Dave Osborn DNS(ain't been well y'know!)

3 up TTT, National Champs - Sunday 4/7/04

This event was held on a 50 km circular course, starting at Loxwood in Surrey, it is a roadie type course, with lots of ups and downs, with one particular up called Petworth hill. Anyway I thought it would be a good idea to get a team together seeing as it was the Nat Champs.

Gary Bryant, Simon Steel and old Bashers entered. We were given a start time of 6.27am, fourth team off. The slow ones tend to go off nearer the start. Anyway the morning was a little overcast but generally dry. So all hyped up we started our ride to the start, only for the boy Simon to puncture just before the start. Ably assisted by Gary the final pump up was done, with me shouting out how many seconds we had to our start. Off we went, somewhat disjointed and we gave the impression that we were connected together by a big piece of elastic. Gary is so sickenly better on the up bits, even poor Simon struggled. At about 15km Gary nearly lost his back wheel and I had an impact puncture in my front wheel. A frantic tube change was undertaken, then we carried on. We were overtaken by our 3min team whilst I changed the tube. Anyway we finished in 1hr 22min 53sec  25km split in 43min 37secs. Our position unfortunatly was second to last, however had I not punctured our time would have been around the 1hr 19min mark as my computer registered 23.6mph avg, this would have raised our position by at least six teams, but hey ho at least we participated, something to tell our grandchildren.

Winners: Blue Sky Cycles: 1h 6m 39s

27/6/04 Southern Counties 50mile TT, Old Ports Club Championship. G50/53.

This course basically is the G25/53 twice, starting at Broadbridge Heath in Sussex, the only difference being you only go up Tollgate Hill once, making up the difference on the second lap by doing a dog leg at Broadbridge Heath.

The weather for the early starters was a little damp but still, but as the morning went on the clouds were blown away by a reasonably stiff breeze, which hit you on the way out from Broadfield roundabout { Crawley } all the way to Southwater roundabout, it was definately easier for the earlier starters.

Two OPs were on the start sheet, Barry Meens and Ian Bashford  off at 54 and 65 respectively.

Results are:
Barry Meens didnt start.
Ian Bashford 2hrs 2mins 19secs avsp 24.53mph for 12th place.
It would appear I have the cup, well lets say I am just looking after it for a year, cos I didnt really win it because I didnt beat anybody.

Thanks to Howard and Simon for doing a stirling job at Moorehead roundabout, maybe next year Simon you will not only fill in you entry form but post it as well!!

Saturday 19/6/04 APIBIKES.COM 25 E2/25.

Simon Steel first time under the hour -Well done Simon!!

This course starts at Newmarket on the A14 travels southwest onto the A11, then turns at Fourwentways at 12.5miles finishing back at Newmarket. An open undulating course. To say it was a little blustery would be an understatement, the early starters having the best of the weather.

Two OPs entered Simon Steel and myself. Our results as follows;

Simon Steel: 58mins 22secs 25.7mph a PB by a couple of minutes and the first time under the hour! Very well done Simon.

Ian Bashford: 56mins 43secs 26.4mph.

The winner did a 51

 Finsbury Park C.C 50 13/6/04

This course starts at Tempsford on the A1, Bedfordshire/Hertfordshire sort of area.Basically its 12.5 miles south on the A1 to the A507 at Stotford where you do a little dog leg, then back to Tempford, then you repeat the same.
Only one OP entered Ian Bashford. The day was glorious with the wind picking up as the morning went on, but fortunatly it only effected you on the northbound sections.
My result
Ian Bashford 1hr 58min 6secs avps 25.4mph a PB for 50 miles.
The winner I Cammish in 1hr 47min 5secs avsp 28mph!!!!

Well there you go I am well happy quickest I have ever ridden 50 miles. On another note you vets, I know I am only a young pup, but over 10, 25 and 50 miles I have got a plus of 44mins 34 secs so far.

ECCA  E4/25 Sunday 6/6/04

This course starts on the A128 in Essex near to Bulphan, goes south to the A13, then to Pitsea, turn, A13 to Stanford le Hope where you do a little dogleg, back the the A13 then A128 to the finish. It was a near perfect day, with a chuff breeze at the start which helped cos its goes uphill abit to the A13.
Four OPs entered
Ian Bashford, Barry Meens, Dave Hickman and Nick Hooper.
Our results:
Ian Bashford 57min 32sec avg sp 26.07mph for 6th place
Barry Meens 1hr 2mins 50sec  avg sp 23.87mph for 15th place
Dave Hickman 1hr 5min 12sec  avg sp 23.01mph 22nd place.
Nick Hooper  1hr 8min 47sec  avg speed 21.81mph for 25th place.
The winner was K Andrewartha of Shaftesbury cc in 53min 18sec avg sp 28.14mph.

Even the women liked it today as Dave found to his cost when his minute a Miss C Lee of the Shaftesbury not only caught him but stuffed another three and a quarter minutes into him, he wasnt a happy bunny when he arrived back at the HQ, Pete Hamilton and Richard Payne of the 34 Nomads found it mildly amusing! Very cruel

VTTA G10/57 Saturday 5/6/04

A ten mile time trial starting near  Rusper road Horsham, nr to Rusper roundabout, basically 5miles towards Crawley then 5miles back, with lots of roundabouts.

Anyway Ian Bashford was the only OP participating and arrived at the HQ nice and early only to be met by lots of strained faces infront of  locked doors! Why is it we always leave the important things to the last minute, well I managed to get in poll position and was first in the door when the keys arrived with the organiser. The weather dull but warm, a slight breeze coming from nowhere imparticular, we were also blessed with a shower for a mile either side of the turn.

My result was 22min 27sec avg sp 26.7mph  8th pos on scratch, however this was a VTTA event so positions are on plus of vet standard, I am blatantly a young pup.

Sussex CA 50 mile TT on 30/5/04

Tthis event was the Sussex C A Championship, Steve Dennis defending his title, that he has had for the past three years.
HQ at Dial Post in deepest Sussex. Due to road works the oridinal course, G50/10 could not be used, so an emergency course was created using some of the Steyning 25. The course started in Hole Street nr Steyning, to A283 down to the B2135 at Steyning, left onto the B2135 to the A24 at West Grinstead, A24 to to Washington roundabout back onto the A283. This course was followed for three laps the finish being on the A283 about a mile and a half from Washington.
To say this was a roadies course would be an understatement, some of the other guys said they had done sporting courses that were easier!
However it wasnt raining but there was a slight breeze which affected you on the A24 section.
Two Old Ports entered
Ian Bashford and Simon Steel
Our results are as follows:
Ian Bashford  2hrs 7mins 40secs avg sp 23.5mph   11th place

Simon Steel  2hrs 10mins 1sec  avg sp 23.01    15th place, { sorry Simon you missed one }

Steve Dennis won the event in 1hr 54min 32sec  avg sp 26.19mph
Only two people beat two hours for the event

E.C.C.A 50 23/5/04

Simon Steel and Ian Bashford entered the event on the E2/50b. A 50 mile time trial in and about Cambridge.
The course starts at Icketon which is just past junction 9 on the M11. It basically uses the A11 and A14, 23.5 miles out and 26.5 miles back.
The day was quite nice but very cold first thing, however we were blessed by the event organiser and only had to get up at 4am to get there, RESULT!!!  Essex events are renowned for their early starts.
Off we set at our selected times, I got to the turn in about 56mins 30, I was hoping for a 57 so I knew what was coming. It was hell for 26.5 miles, but hey we do this for fun so why am I whinging.
Final results:
Simon Steel  2hrs 2mins 52secs avg speed 24.42mph.  A personnel best. 15th place

Ian Bashford  2hrs 4mins 21secs avg speed 24.13mph.   18th place

It was a field of 60 riders, the winner and top seed being Steve China  in  1hr 48mins 20secs avg speed 27.69mph.

Simon is to be congratulated as it was a personnel best for him by a minute and a half.

Sunday 9th May, VTTA 30 mile on Q30/12

Bashers reports:This course starts at Lydd in Kent, goes to Brenzett, Brooklands then turns and travels north along the A2070 up to Cloverleaf roundabout, near the M20, then returns south finishing just before the road back down to Lydd village. It is a very undulating and an open course, who on earth would want to live there is be beyond me.
I was the only lucky participant from the Old Ports to enter. Well I got to the HQ at 5.50am so as to get myself prepared, it was overcast to say the least, but there wasnt a howling wind, as there has been on previous occasions, then with about 20mins to go to my start it began to rain, not the really heavy stuff, but that light rain that soaks you to the skin. I was encouraged at the start by one of the timekeepers that said ' this is a good day, cos its always one or the other down here '.

Anyway my result was 1hr 14mins 29secs {a pesonnel best by 3 mins on this particular course}, average speed 24.2mph, for 12th place on scratch, long long way down on vet standard, only a boy you see.

Saturday 8th May, Catford CC 10

This course on a good day is pretty ballistic, it starts on the A26 at Tonbridge just south of the A21 westbound, after starting riders propel themselves down a 45mph descent onto the A21, 5miles later at Weald roudabout, turn then back to Tonbridge.
However someone had booked just a little bit of rain and the juggernaughts for some reason dont want to slow down. The results for the Old Ports that entered, Ozzy, Disco, Nick, the Boy Simon and Bashers, are as follows;
Nobody raced !!! although Ozzy had prebooked his abscence on Thursday, seeing he was second rider off at 6.02am

Addiscombe Open 25TT 2/5/04

Well you fellow Portlys and marshallers, whilst you all were still wrapped up in bed, three of the clubs finest prepared to do battle in Horsham Sussex.
The course was the G25/53, which starts at Robin Hood roundabout near Broadbridge Heath, then A24 turning right onto A264 to Broadfield roundabout, where you turn then retrace to Tollgate Hill, quick blast up Tollgate { well the fast boys do } back down to A264 then left to the A24 onwards and upwards to Southwater { 21miles } turn again then push hard to the finish at Broadbridge Heath.
The day was still with a beautiful blue sky but it was a bit brassic to say the least, Ozzy Nick and Bashers were the clubs representitives.
Results as follows
Nick Hooper    1hr 10mins 15secs
Dave Osborn   1hr 7mins  11secs
Ian Bashford    1hr 1min   25secs

Dont know our position or the winner cos we all had to rush off to do some sunbathing and arm waving in Crowhurst. I think the winner may have done a sub 53 min ride, big hitters coming down to Sussex, not on, obsviously testing the course as the National 25TT is on this course in just over a months time.

The South Eastern R.C. 34mile 2up Team Time Trial,

This was run on the GS/489, a two lap, roadie type, circular course starting at Dunsfold in Surrey.

Bashers and Simon Steele took up the challenge, it was a quite lovely morning, but bl**dy freezing.
8.24am we were off blistering along the lanes, however at 11miles I noticed we were avering 24.5mph, hmmmm I thought, but we carried on our average did fall off quite dramatically as we neared the end of the first lap. In body language alone both Simon and I agreed, that we were both getting sh***ed. So a more even tempo was adopted, well most of the time anyway! A first lap time of 44mins 25secs, with a final time of 1hr 30mins 36secs was achieved, average speed 22.57mph.We ended up in 5th place having been beaten into 4th by a team from Redhill CC by 6secs, their first lap time being the same as ours. The winners were P.Pickup and P Kench of Liphook Cycles RT in 1hr 17mins 3secs first lap in 38mins 5secs.

Redmon C.C Open 25 4/4/04

Sunday G25/48,

Two Old Ports entered which was excellant, Gary Bryant and me. Our results are as follows

The winners of the events were;
