Time Trial Reports and Results 2008
Hitchin Nomads CC 25, 1st June
Bashers reports:
"I should have done the gardening instead! "
my trip up the A1{M} was pretty fruitless, it was overcast with light rain and a slight wind from the NE, so basically into it till the turn. At which point my legs turned to jelly and I didnt have the speed to pick up my time in the last ten miles, finishing with a 58.44. Just after I got to my car the heavens opened, but in the HQ, people were already saying Hutchinson was up for a sub 50!!!! I went home and mowed the grass........but us early starters definately had the worst conditions............just like Saturday!!!
Westerly CC 25, 1st June 2008
Stuart Hourigan reports:
Phil and Willie flying!!
Well I have managed to actually finish an event, which is a bonus in itself at the moment. Phil and myself went down to Marlow to ride in the Westerly 25 on H25/2.
A little early drizzle and surprising wind seemed make things feel slow. The course offers a gift start from the top of a hill with the first few miles being around the 40mph mark, then just miles of dead roads then good bits etc.. We both found it hard to work the gears, you shifted up and started to spin too much, down and started to grind to stop. Anyway after all the issues we still both managed to put in seasons bests and a new PB for me.
Phil - 56.34
Stuart - 57.41
Winner Richard Simmons - 51.16 clear of second by some 2 minutes.
Worthing Excelsior 18th May 2008
A windy day on the G25/53
Andy Green reports
:
Despite the rain giving way to hazy sunshine today was hard work into the wind. After last week’s festival of PB’s this week was a bit of a letdown. Four Ports were on the start sheet and I had the luxury of an 8.18 start time in a field of 112 riders. Iain was not feeling too good and sent apologies. Stuart managed yet another punctured tub before he started then had to pull up a couple of miles in as his old war wound bit again.
My new seat post came loose immediately after the start and I lost a minute or so at the Rusper roundabout fumbling with Allen keys and swearing. Once I got going I felt ok though the ride back from the Southwater Rbt into the wind was purgatory.
Bash put in a solid time on what was a slow day for pretty much everyone.
Ian Bashford 1.01.46
Andy Green 1.05.38
Winner – Gary Powdrill, London Dynamo -54.35
Vet on Standard- Harry Featherstone with a plus 20.56
First Lady- Helen Bullimore 1.05.30
Thanks Bash for holding on till I got in.
Norwood Paragon 25 11th May
Willie sets a new PB and Fatherjac sleeps on!
Phil Watkins Reports:
We had 3 Old Ports turnout for the Norwood Paragon 25 on G25/53. Stuart was off early in the field, 4 minutes after Fatherjac woke up having mis-set his alarm clock! Stuart, Recovered from injury and probably still recovering mentally from the 2 punctures he was unlucky to have at Chertsey yesterday he went round in a new Personal Best of 58.26. Iain Hawthorne and myself were off a bit later. After racing yesterday Iain showed that a bit of form must be arriving as he too put in a personal best of 1.00.43 so the hour is beckoning. I was convinced I was going better than 2 weeks ago but the finish was pretty tough and I struggled a bit on the last leg just managing to better the time 2 weeks ago by 1 second in 57.23, my best since 1999 so almost 3 best rides.

Addiscombe CC Open 25 Mile TT
27th April 2008 G25/53, Andy reports:
It was great to see Addiscombe getting a full field with reserves to this event. The Ports were once again well represented with 6 riding. A few spots of rain on the wind screen as I drove down had me fearing the worst. But the weather was kind , brightening into a sunny morning for the later starters.
It was a pretty successful day for most. Phil’s put pressure on a few of the scratch riders. Iain and Bash did very strong rides, putting the misfortunes of the Redmon 25 well behind them. John, though a bit heavy legged from his training camp improved his time, and I was satisfied with making a bit more progress. Stuart having to pull up short with a leg injury was the only real downer.
So this is how it finished up;
Phil Watkins- 57.24 (he is starting to get the feel of his new bike now)
Ian Bashford- 1.01.00
Iain Hawthorn- 1.02.08
Andy Green- 1.04.26
John Mulvaney- 1.08.28
Stuart Hourigan- DNF
Last year this event was won by Michael Hutchenson with a 51.12, and nobody came to close to that today. For a long time it looked like Phil Bull from VC Elan was going to take it. His 53.58 had a clear edge on the field. But he was thwarted by Paul Mill of Team Edwardes, rider 120 who came in with a 53.37
Catford CC Q10/22 26th April 2008
Phil Watkins reports:
The original course should have been the Q10/19 Tonbridge but it was rerouted to the definately sporting Q10/22 at Harrietsham on what seemed to be a tough day. We had 3 riders riding today. All 3 were decent rides considering the few TTs that we have all done this year.
Phil Watkins 23:05
Iain Hawthorne 25:14
Dave Hickman 25:46
The winner was Phil Bull with a really good 21:09.
SCCU 20th April 2008
Stuart reports:
Another good turn out for the Old Ports with 5 riders all competing and more importantly all finishing. The morning was dry but the wind was deceptive, well it was at 7.11 when I started. I have no excuses for anyone but myself and that is my computer fell off near the start so I was struggling to pace myself and yes I am aware that back in the day we had no....and we still managed to...
Well done to Dave and Andy for not getting lost, Bash for keeping the air in his tryes and welcome back to Gary and well done in his first competitive race since December.
Willie 1.00.26
Bash 1.02.08
Gary 1.03.07
Andy 1.05.12
Dave 1.05.42
Winner : Steve Dennis 54.51
Magnificent ‘uhrm’ Seven?!!
Redmon CC 25 G25/45 13th April 2008
With pretty much a full field including 7 Old Ports today promised much. Rain and snow held off, and though a little chill the sun put in an early appearance. There was a stiff breeze that seemed to gather strength as the morning went on, and this course includes a long draggy section along the A29.
Phil and Stuart put in strong rides, with a special mention in dispatches for Phil. Going under the hour today, having taken the 3rd Cat race at Chertsey yesterday – great. FJ put in a solid ride in his comeback race, but for the rest of us things did not quite go according to plan. Dave forgot which course he was riding, Bashers was on for a decent ride until a puncture intervened. Iain was heading for a cracking time until he followed somebody out for a Sunday bimble and went off course. My only excuse was that I was a bit tired.
The winner was Laurence Harding of www.agiskoviner.com in 53:49
Maybe not our finest day in sporting terms but great to have so many Old Ports out racing, and given the way the rain is beating down now, a lucky escape with the weather.
The scores on the doors:
Phil Watkins-59.09
Stuart Hourigan- 59.25
Iain Hawthorn- 1.05.51
Andy Green- 1.08.08
John Mulvaney- 1.09.47
Ian Bashford- 1.14.32 (1.06 without the puncture)
Dave Hickman- DNF
5 April 2008
Saturday ride in the SCCU Sporting 10 beats the Sunday snow!!
Bashers and Willie had the best of the weekend. Sunday being cancelled in the Southern counties 2 day sporting TT's due to snow!
Stuart Hourigan reports:
The weekend arrived and so did the weather, although a great morning for Testing. Unfortunately the 10 mile event took place in the afternoon at the same time as the rain decided to start, and this coupled with the local farmers depositing parts of their fields on the road made conditions very greasy. Whilst I was warming up (honest I was) quite a few casualties were slowly returning to HQ.
Myself and Bash decided we would take all corners and descents very easy as neither of us fancied a walk back to HQ. It would appear that Bash really did pay heed to the conditions!
The winner was Matthew Miles : 22.28 One of only three riders under 24 mins
Stuart : 25.59 (1.58 faster than 2007)
Bashers : 27.28
Bashers is back!
Dave Hickman reports about an event which took place somewhere in Surrey or possibly Sussex??... 16 March
Dave Hickman reports:
it was pretty miserable - Oz and I both rode down(where? Ed) - managed to miss each other at the start seemingly by a couple of minutes - both thought no-one else had bothered (being sensible!) Bashers seemed to get his money's worth - he was still shaking with cold half an hour after finishing and changing - managed a 1.07 which for the day was not too shabby! Good to see Nic & June , Howard & Valda doing the teas .
Bashers commented: " Just to put my result into perspective, the winner did 52 minute dead, I was 6 minutes off what I should have done, but hey its start, this going on holiday for 7 weeks really naffs up the cycling. Oh and I did come in 23rd position today so others must have had similar excuses to me { idle fat lazy bastards}"
East Surrey Hardriders 9th March 2008
Andy Green reports:
Having chosen to miss out on the Eastbourne Weekend to ride this brute I was determined to make it worth the effort. With an 8.18 start it was still pretty chill and the roads were wet, but there was no more rain threatening and the wind had dropped.30 miles is a funny distance.
The course was never really flat with a couple of serious climbs including the nasty kick up after Rusper roundabout. I would seriously have preferred an option more forgiving that a 39/23 to get up this one. That said I was feeling pretty good and the run in was good and fast. Finished with a satisfying 1.25.45. By the time I left the hall the leading rider had cracked out a 1.07- this is remarkable. Anyone that beats that was having a top day. London cyclesport report here
Phil, Willie and 'Liability Test the water in their first TT of season
Redhill CC 18 mile hardriders event 24th February
Stuart Hourigan reports :
Three Old Ports entered this early season event and we could not have hoped for better weather, dry and quite calm. Phil Watkins was the first Old Port off, 5 mins later myself and then 6 mins later Andy was off, keenly followed by the eventual winner Dave Dent.
All three of us enjoyed the course, there is nothing like hitting a 1 in 8 ascent within half a mile of the start to let you know that you are Testing again.
As we would expect Phil put in a solid ride in a strong field and even had to deal with his Tri-Bars slipping during the race. Phil came home in 12th postition
Personally I have no valid excuses to explain my time, although I am quite happy with it finishing in 21st place.
Andy claims he trained hard yesterday and assures us that there is photographic evidence showing him with his foot down whilst the sunday drivers were dithering about. Andy finished in 48th Place
Times
Phil Watkins 45.43
Stuart Hourigan 46.38
Andy Green 52.39
Winner : Dave Dent 42.08
Course Record 42.03
The winning team was Wightlink which included Dave Dent and two other riders also putting in sub 45 minute times. We didn't stand a chance but we had fun trying or at least I did.
